The Access Card

Information, Evidence, Discounts and Opportunities for Disabled People

The Access Card in association with YCT

What is the Access Card?

Yorkshire Children’s Trust are pleased to partner with Nimbus to provide the Access Card to children in the Yorkshire region. This is a card like no other, it will translate your disability and needs into symbols which will highlight your needs and barriers that you face and allow organisations to make the reasonable adjustments you may need.

This card will help negate the need to carry confidential medical letters and proof of disability benefit awards so you can discreetly gain access to additional tickets for carers, early access into venues to avoid queues or perhaps access to a staff toilet when you have an urgent need.

It’s all part of your rights on the Equality Act and should help prevent some of the embarrassing conversations and unnecessary questions.

We are also very pleased to be able to offer any child (up to the age of 16) a discount off the Nimbus Access Card (see below).

You will need to be able to provide evidence of your illnesses or disabilities on the application form, this could be in the form of medical reports, doctors letters and proof of disability benefits.

You will also need proof of ID such as a scan of your passport or driving licence.

For applications for children, don’t forget to use the
discount code YCTChild16 to get £5 off your card

What do the card symbols mean?
Standing & Queuing
Awarded to those who find standing or queuing a substantial barrier to accessing services or for people who are not able to understand the concept of queuing.

Wheelchair Access
For those that may need wheelchair access. Focus here can highlight not only those that always need a wheelchair, but those who may have varied wheelchair needs.

Distance
If you have difficulty moving yourself a short distance. This would have to be evidenced that there is a medical condition that causes a significant impact on the distance.

Urgent Toilet Need
For people with incontinence issues or those with a sudden urgent need. This may not necessarily show a need for an accessible toilet.

Assistance Animal
Require the support of an assistance dog or other animal due to the nature of your disability.

Essential Companion
For those with significant difficulty in accessing services without the assistance or support from another person. The need must be substantial and frequent.

Visual Information
For people who may need alternative formats or guidance. It may also include people with learning difficulties that have difficulty accessing written information.

Audible Information
For those having difficulty accessing or processing audible information such as the deaf or hearing impaired. Also for those unable to understand spoken instructions.

Miscellaneous
For everything else and providers are encouraged to ask for more information on how they can support the specific needs of the card holder. For example, epilepsy or autism.

Venues and Locations

Nimbus are having discussions with local and national venues to encourage to recognise the symbols on the Access Card to enable them to quickly understand what additional needs you may have so they can make the reasonable adjustments for you.

The card is recognised at all CredAble organisations* and the benefits of the card will vary from place to place. For some places it may give you a discount or special offer, for other places it may be recognised to give you a free carer ticket.

Remember though, the card is a demonstration of the needs you require and is related to the Equality Act, and all providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments, whether they accept the card or not.

The usual price for the card is £15, and the card is valid for three years, however, Yorkshire Children’s Trust have secured an exclusive discount so the card can be purchased for just £10 and will still be valid for three years.

There are no age limits for the cards, once your child reaches adulthood, they can continue to use the Access Card as normal.

What do customers say?

“I have been asking for something like this for years. My disability is not always visible so I have to go through the embarrassment of explaining my personal heath problems to complete strangers who sometimes don’t even believe me. I’m hoping this card will be recognised everywhere, as it will change my life.”

“I want to attend gigs, but can’t do it if I’m not able to sit or have to queue to get in.”

“I am often in situations where I have to provide evidence of a disability, usually using proof of DLA. However this proof has nothing to do with reason for the need. A card which can be carried in a wallet and which relates to the need would seem ideal”

“My daughter had cancer when she was five and been left with complicated medical needs, even though shes now technically an adult, she needs a carer with her at all times. This card is an excellent way to show her needs without having to show confidential medical letters or proof of disability benefits.”
